Nathan Blecharczyk, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Airbnb, is no stranger to creative hustle. From teaching himself how to code as a teenager to building Airbnb’s first website and navigating the company through the pandemic, Nathan’s journey reflects resilience, determination and innovation. At OPTECH 2025, Nathan will share lessons from building Airbnb and helping the company adapt through scale, regulation, and changing customer needs, including developing the company’s growing real estate partnerships. As housing and real estate face a new wave of disruption—from AI to regulatory pressure—Nathan’s story offers powerful insight into leading through transformation. This fireside conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at Airbnb’s evolution from a scrappy startup to a noun and a verb —and lessons that real estate tech leaders can learn as they navigate their own digital future. It’s a must-hear for anyone shaping housing's next chapter. |
Bio: Nathan Blecharczyk is the co-founder of Airbnb and Chief Strategy Officer. Nathan plays a leading role in driving key strategic initiatives across the global business, particularly those which require a holistic understanding of the business, public policy, product, data, and Airbnb’s long-term stakeholder interests.
Nathan has led the creation of Airbnb’s engineering, data science, payments, and performance marketing teams. More recently, he oversaw the creation of the Airbnb City Portal, an industry-first software solution that addresses the needs of cities relating to short-term rentals; Airbnb’s reservation screening technology, to help identify potentially high-risk reservations and prevent those users from taking advantage of our platform; and the launch of Airbnb-friendly apartments, which allows renters to benefit from hosting.
Nathan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science from Harvard University. Together with his wife Elizabeth, he enjoys being an active Airbnb Host and has welcomed hundreds of guests since Airbnb launched. Nathan and Elizabeth are signatories to the Giving Pledge.

Your Questions: Answered
-
Why is OPTECH moving to the Real Estate Technology and Transformation Center (RETTC)?
Simple: To stay ahead of what’s coming. As AI, consolidation, and regulatory changes accelerate, OPTECH needs a strategic home that’s built for the future. As NMHC's new real estate affiliate, RETTC provides the community, focus, and mission alignment to keep OPTECH at the center of real estate innovation—not just for a few days a year but all year round.
Put another way, this shift:- Protects OPTECH’s role as the industry’s tech and innovation hub
- Builds a more strategic, mission-driven attendee base
- Elevates the experience for committed apartment operators and solution providers
- Delivers deeper connections and more actionable outcomes
-
Why are you making OPTECH a RETTC members-only event?
Because the future of real estate tech deserves more than just a conference—it deserves a true community. By making OPTECH exclusive to RETTC members, we're adding value and impact by ensuring the room is filled with committed operators and solution providers who are serious about driving positive change not only for their businesses but also the people they serve all year round. It's more about elevating the experience than limiting access.
